People in America today are so concerned about taking their daily recommended vitamins because of self-diagnosed deficiencies they believe they have, and one of those vitamins is biotin. Biotin is said to help grow longer and stronger hair and nails, and is raved about in the beauty industry, so you already know women all over the nation are poppin’ these pills like it’s their job. This B7 vitamin is produced in our bodies from intestinal bacteria, and can aid in cell growth, which is why it is linked to healthier looking hair, skin, and nails. Little do most of you know, taking biotin supplements is probably just a waste of your time.
Biotin is water-soluble, which means any excess in the body is then turned to waste. Let’s talk about where else biotin naturally occurs: egg yolks, leafy greens, and salmon. Many healthy individuals are eating plenty of these nutrient-dense foods, and do not need to be taking extra biotin because the body has already produced enough.
Dr. Jessica Weiser, a certified-board dermatologist in New York, has said that taking biotin supplements can cause breakouts because of the vitamin imbalance in the body. You see, biotin AND pantothenic acid (aka vitamin B5) are absorbed from the intestines via the same receptors, says Weiser. She then goes on to explain that by taking biotin, you’re outweighing the amount of B5 being absorbed, which can then lead to an actual vitamin B5 deficiency. Since pantothenic acid (B5) regulates functions of the surface layer on the skin, it is important to have because the vitamin helps keep breaksouts on the skin from happening, which is why being deficient in vitamin B5 is going to make you more susceptible to acne.
I do not really believe in taking supplements because I feel the vitamins naturally occurring in nutritious super foods provide more benefits than man-made pills do, but I’m also not here to dictate what personally works for you. If you find taking biotin is actually improving the state of your hair and nails, then keep on doing you boo-boo, but from now on make sure to also be taking a vitamin B5 supplement alongside biotin, to ensure no imbalances in your body occurs.
